Speed River Project

Speed River Project

The Woolwich Arms is a proud sponsor of the annual Speed River Cleanup, coordinated by OPIRG-Guelph for 28 years.
Each year, this fun, city-wide event coordinates 200 plus community volunteers in an effort to remove visible waste from the Speed River’s waters and shoreline. This special event champions the spirit of community environmental stewardship and links daily decisions and actions to the health of local waterways.

The Speed River Project grew out of OPIRG-Guelph’s Annual Speed River Cleanup. Its first phase occurred between 1988 and 1997 and involved large-scale naturalization initiatives, ecological monitoring, education and outreach, all supported by OPIRG-Guelph’s staff and volunteers.

The goal of this new phase of the Speed River Project is essentially the same: to provide meaningful opportunities for students and the broader community to engage in action-oriented projects intended to enhance the ecological health of the Speed and Eramosa Rivers.

Major portions of the funding for this fundraising phase of the project are provided through the amazing Creemore Springs Dinners held at the Woolwich Arms each summer.
