The Story of Local Foods of the Americas

Many people are surprised when they discover some of their favourite foods did not come from the ‘olde’ country. For example, if you thought the potato is Irish in origin or the tomato came from Italy then you are wrong! Foods that were native to the Americas, and unavailable in Europe before the voyages of the vikings and Columbus, include sweet red and green peppers, corn, peanuts, turkey, bison, vanilla, avocado, chocolate and, yes, tomatoes and potatoes. At the pub we take pride in featuring many of these foods to accompany our locally crafted wines and beers.

Call of the Wild!

A century ago frontiersmen and some natives lived predominately on Bison meat. It has been called the "original health food” because of its nutritional values. Bison is high in proein, low in cholesterol and has less fat than beef. No antibiotics, chemicals of growth hormones are used in raising this cattle. And, above all, Bison tastes great!

Gastro pub

The Woolwich Arrow was Guelph's first "gastro pub" when it started serving upscale pub food back in 1990.  Gastro pub is a term first coined in 1991 in Britain.  The "Wooly" was ahead of the curve when in started redefining pub food in the nineties and helped create the trend towards higher quality cuisine in pubs.
